About FKM Fluorocarbon
Fluorocarbon elastomers have become of great importance in the sealing industry. Due to its many good properties, such as chemical compatibility, temperature range, low compression setting, and excellent aging properties, fluorocarbon rubber is the most important single elastomer developed in recent history. Fluorocarbon elastomers are highly fluorinated carbon-based polymers used in applications that need to withstand aggressive chemical and ozone attacks.
· The material has a working temperature range of -26°C to + 205° / 230°C (-15°F to + 400° / 440°F).
· When used for a short time, the material can withstand even higher temperatures.
· Special compounds with improved chemical resistance are available. ERIKS is constantly developing new compounds in its own R&D centres.
In general, increasing fluorine content improves resistance to chemical attack, while reducing low-temperature properties. However, there are special quality fluorocarbons that do have a high fluorine content with low temperature properties.
FKM Applications
Fluorocarbon O-rings are used in aircraft, automobiles, and other mechanical devices that require maximum resistance at elevated temperatures and that deal with liquids.
FKM (FPM, Viton®, Fluorel®) is resistant to mineral oils and fats, aliphatic, aromatic and also special chlorinated hydrocarbons, gasoline, diesel fuels, silicone oils and greases. It is suitable for high vacuum applications. Many fluorocarbon compounds have a higher than normal mold shrinkage rate. Moulds for fluorocarbon products are therefore often different from moulds for nitrile.
